What is life?
What is it made of?
As I pass a person on the street
what is there answer?
Freedom?
Happiness?
Family?
Or is it fear
Bills
Homelessness
Expectations...
And I wonder
Do these people hear everyday
from family or friends
'All you have to do'
'If you would just'
From people who have no understanding
Of the pain
The fear
The stress
I sit with broken legs
on shoes of lead and concrete
they weigh me down and hold me back
staring at my goal which is miles away
and you stand beside me
legs good as new
strong and sturdy
and you look me in the eye and tell me
'Get there'
You swear you just want to help
you yell and scream at me
'Get there! Get there! '
With your strong sturdy legs
and I crawl
my legs mangled from my past
mangled from my choices
from lifes uncontrollable instances
You look at me like my struggle is tedious
like you would have no trouble
with your strong sturdy legs
and your weightless feet like air
and then from across this desert of hopelessness
I see my friend, my true family
with broken heavy legs
and they crawl to me
and they throw an arm over my shoulder
'Stand! '
they call as they push me up
I see their legs mangled as well
and yet they take on the weight of my life
they struggle
and so I lean into them
'You too! '
I call
and we help one and other
as you stand with strong sturdy legs
and watch us
you dont lift a finger
you watch us with our heavy feet
and our crippled legs
moving towards our goal so slowly
with help from one and other.
And when we reach it we are renewed
our legs: Fixed.
And you stand alone across this barren
watching us remove our lead shoes
from a mile away
We smile with one and other
we rejoice
we appreciate the little things and suddenly
you want to be a part of this
lonliness crashes down on you
it breaks your legs
and fills your shoes with lead
and you see this mile ahead of you
that you must walk now in our shoes
and you cry
you grovel
in all your life you have never seen this perspective
your legs were always so sturdy
but now you are alone
and as tears and confusion fill your eyes
you feel a hand on your shoulder
and you are lifted from the ground
by these familiar faces
'Stand'
we say as we help you up with our sturdy legs
we take you to our peaceful place
and you cry tears of idiocy and shame
for you never really knew
what it was like to walk a mile in our shoes
but that pain is so wretched
no man deserves it
And I would never
wish it on anyone.
