The Path Of Fools

My wife she blames some celestial wrath
My daughter says its the work of the devil
Well I blame the mortgage
And the dreams that it levelled
For our lives could have been good
And the shade would have been cool
Had I not made the decision
To embark upon the path of fools

Back when the banker came knocking
in the drought of '85
the lakes had dried up, the leaves shrivelled
And my farm it was barely alive
Times were tough, our means were rough
With my last quarter I quenched my thirst in the bar
And I caught sight of the banker there
Boy, did he look sharp as a Czar!

He looked at me and sidled over
the banker soon was a friend of mine
When he patiently listened to my woes
I thought he was really quite kind
So we exchanged our stories and our drinks
I told him about the family jewels
And when he suggested the mortgage
I scoffed at the path of fools

But the Banker was a good friend
looking out for my best interests
He told about equal monthly installments
and of inflations's effect on interest
And when I paid close attention
The scheme didn't appear Faustian at all!
So I mortgaged everything that I had
I figured it that must be the right call

And before I knew it,
I was left with nothing
No farm, and no family jewels
I'm just an old man coughing
who can't afford his medicine
Who just couldn't follow the simple rules
The Banker was a friend of mine
and I set out on the path of fools
