Through Another's Eyes

Wouldn't it be strange
To see the world through another's eyes?
To feel what they feel
To see what they see
To be separate from your own numb hollowness
And to be immersed in an another's emptiness
And you feel a twinge of familiarity
As you see a broken family
A father striving to regain his youth
Feeling the freedom slip through his fingers
Like water in cupped hands
And he grasps at the water
And it's cold and oh so promising
And he is stuck between jumping in the river
And staying on the shore
And you see a mother desperate to escape
Into the looming world of mediocrity
And new love and disappointment
And the price is good, so she buys in
But the product is faulty
And they won't ever send her one
That she won't have to return
And then you see a child
One that ran as fast she could
With ambition and hope
And everyone is proud of her
And everyone can see a bright future
Shining in the hazel iris of her eyes
And then you see another child
Sitting in the corner rocking gently, methodically
Her face is blank and white and sick
And she is merely a puppet
That won't move when the strings pull
And she's useless and futureless
And there is nothing shining
In the unimpressive pool of brown
That litters her wistful eyes
And now you're back in your own head
Seeing through your own eyes
Feeling your own frozen fingers
Drowning in the deep red liquid of life
That drips from your half-empty veins
And you sit in your own corner
Rocking gently, methodically
And at last you realise
All you will see will be seen by your own eyes
Through your own emptiness and hollowness
And you clutch at that liquid of life
Hoping, desperately, that you can suck it back up
And cut the puppet strings and stop rocking
And run away
And create a shine in your own dull eyes
