The Lake

I watch as the fog comes off the lake,
its birth like thousands of souls rising from death.
Like ghosts of my past that never forsake,
but haunt me with every labored breath.

The darkness seeps in and explodes with violent rain,
the acid tears burn as they envelope me.
Sometimes I think I'd rather be numb than feel the pain,
But when I'm with you, I know that could never be.

I cannot sleep because my dreams are filled with you.
Suffocating, I set fire to every memory of us.
Above the surface you smile as I'm turning blue,
'You should've known better than in me to trust.'

The water wraps its arms around me,
I can feel its cold lips press against mine.
Drowning, lost in your eyes, I know I'll never be free.
How could I not see, ignore every sign?

I can't stop it from happening- I know it's too late,
Even if I could, I don't think I'd try.
The moment we met, it sealed my fate,
as I give in with one last frozen sigh.
