Cotton

It hid your freckled face
In a pink cloud of candy
pig tailed and all teeth
ribbons of it in your hair,
pleated tartan skirts
white socks and buckles.

Then it came in your flowered frocks
and I looked for you in doorways
with the sunlight behind
and the frame of your thighs,
and it wrapped us in the bed sheets
cool, warm and hot.

Then it got into the sky
in the summers with the children
and it raced in the wind on the beach.
Strands of it were tangled up against the blue,
it was in your eyes
it was everywhere.

Now it gets into my mind
at the least of expected times.
