Quest for solitude - a villanelle
I often wonder whether I'm alone
And if you walk beside me in the lane
And think, why is he always on his own?
I try to think of all those that I've known
In youthful days of sun and lively rain
In all the moods of weather, I'm alone.
In dismal days when cheeriness has flown
I see the looks that follow me in vain
And ask: why is he always on his own?
Across my path, the wind lets out a moan
I shiver, hitch my collar, then complain
I'm cold and ponder whether I'm alone.
And consider all the frailties I have shown
To those who fail to understand my pain
And wanting to be always on my own.
Arrival! Now my hopes are fully grown!
There's no-one here, my solitude is plain.
They might all wonder whether I'm alone
But I know why I'm always on my own.
