Bob Green Poems

Auntie Salma has died
A Palestinian mother
Far from home
Not complaining
...

handcuffed and blindfolded
and taken to an unknown location
handcuffed and blindfolded
hooded lost and hidden
...

Come around
Listen in
Settle down
Hear the sound
...

Gentle Aboud
Just out from Ramallah
Where Jesus himself
Once preached at each door
...

Apache copters fire on schools
filled with children,
filled with teachers
While the real Apaches
...

Wall slices Palestine,
wall fence, human shame
wall steals water
wall divides town
...

Grant us peace,
that we may not oppress our neighbors
Grant us justice,
that we may not enslave our neighbors
...

Gaza dying quickly
parched and starving
sea close by
tongue caked with salt
...

Then let’s forget the word entirely
it’s a made up modern word
for what’s been done by tribes since before before
made up by Raphael Lemkin
...

I speak of your insistence
on believing what you’re told
...

Just Lemons And Limes

Auntie Salma has died
A Palestinian mother
Far from home
Not complaining

Her daughters and son crushed fresh lime and lemon leaves
From potted plants
And held them to her nose at the last
An aroma of home
Not war
Not separation
Just Lemons and limes

Her last meal was foule
Picked fresh in her son’s garden
In Vermont
Not in Aboud
Not in al-Ouds
Not exile

Just lemons and limes

Just freedom
