Vision (One)

I closed my eyes
Into a hesitant darkness
And let my inner eye seek the vista
It had long hungered for!

I saw a flat, gray surface.
Lustrous with a silky sheen.
It looked like a huge slab
Of a delicate oriental confectionery,
Served up for all mankind to enjoy.

Then, its surface began to sparkle
In little dots that grew in luminance and number
Like a million stars
Lighting up the dawn sky in a desert.

Then, as if commanded by human mind
Which constantly looks for simplified geometry,
The sparkling points arranged themselves
Into checked patterns,
The sparkles marking the corners of each little square.

Slowly, the flat subsurface began to warp
Into humps and valleys.
First in regular two-tone,
Next, growing into increasingly complex shapes,
The gray firmament now undulated
And folded itself into shapes of idealized flowers.

Suddenly, the silver sparkles glowed red.
The silky gray substratum turned black,
The entire complex combination now vague…
Reminiscent of a new volcano
Spewing forth highly fluid lava.

And then I opened my eyes
And cast my eyes on my poor, raped land!
Its sparkles burned out
Like cigarette ash blown into the sea.
