Carolyn June Poems

Temperature rose to 100 today
Makes sense to stay in where it's cool
No breeze even blowing this way
To go out in this heat takes a fool
...

So sick and tired of all those marketing calls
Accent is mid-western or a southern drawl
Calling me at meal time; boy, they have the gall!
Each annoying speech makes my epidermis crawl
...

As I ride the escalators to the street above
I listen for the sound of magical love
Musicians tuning their sounds up there
Greet me every day as I climb the stairs
...

Compose in rhyme or in prose
Words on paper, thoughts expose
Check the grammar and typos
Begin to write; see how it goes
...

Please don't try to diagnose me
Mental illness is real, not mythology
Stop trying to fix me; just let me be
As hard as you try there is no remedy
...

Common sense cannot be taught
Not begged, borrowed, or brought
Like the human heart it needs exercise
Without precious air, it eventually dies
...

When I was just twenty years old
My very first ride; a ‘68 Camaro

My car had speed and a lot of style
...

Fog encircling a dimly street light
Footsteps heard in the quiet night
End of the block; two at the most
His misty form resembles a ghost
...

Crouched in a corner, she covers her face
He storms the room, tearing up the place
Asked a question; 'What did he want to eat'
He answers with fists; she, in turn, retreats

Heat Wave

Temperature rose to 100 today
Makes sense to stay in where it's cool
No breeze even blowing this way
To go out in this heat takes a fool

Seniors sit in front of their fans
Trying their best to beat the heat
Wear long socks to avoid a sun burn
To their fragile legs and feet

The children are now out of school
No more classes until the fall
Officials decide to open the pool
Down the block from the shopping mall

Bottled water gone up one dollar
You can't find relief anywhere
Too hot for the babies to holler
Or youth on the corner to swear

People try to deal with the weather
No one on the streets at high noon
It will get worse before it gets better
And to think we are not out of June!
