For My Mom

Please don't be down
I know that it is hard for you
no one sees the silent tears
when the lights are turned down
but the heaviness is there
when dawn returns

even difficult to always remember why
or for whom you cry
but you know that you are slowly losing control
every day a little harder
your mind, your body, your emotions
you know that you are slowly losing control,

but please don't be down
for our memories are strong
and we see you for the light you shined
and the paths that you guided,
and as the shell grows older
our memories become stronger

let me take your trembling hand
and hold it softly
let me stroke your arm
as you stroked mine as a child
let me dry your tears
and tell you that it will be alright
we remember the light.

do not be embarrassed
for your body has changed
and you can no longer bathe yourself
for this is the way of life
you knew this
and for this reason
taught us the way of spirituality

for the soul remains bright
and will move on
as we shed the shell
that housed the person known as you
the spark of energy that
powered us through our hard times
please don't be down
