The Defeated Dream

I was told to fly,
To search the horizon.

Reason? Someone heard me,
Whimpering last night.

Orders came, preparations followed.
'I demand her wings, today, no 'morrow! '

Surprised at his majesty's vocab,
I turned around and packed my bags.

By noon some twenty wings arrived,
After came a hundred more.

Consumed in being absolutely lonely,
I planned it quickly, my certain journey.

In the evening, I was called,
Mouth opened and jaw dropped.

'Choose your wings,
Hear the bell ring,
Give that ball a swing,
Ka-bing, Ka-boom-Ka-bing! '

I saw my wings,
Just made my mind.

They snatched it back,
'Oh! Please don't mind! '

Other wings were bigger than my,
'These are for me, made to fly', said I.

'That wing is out of question,
Your master's not satisfied.
I thereby give you this,
A wing of your ruler's choice.'

'But, isn't its weight a little more than my?
With that, will I be able to fly? '

'I force you not, do what you desire,
But don't come complaining, when there's a fire.'

I tried to resist and thought I succeeded,
He looked the other way, and then receded.

Next day, a news printed,
'The daughter of the king has been evicted.'

The headline said:
'For me, she's dead, dead as the yellow leaf.'

Days went by, and back I was ordered,
How long could a father live without his daughter?

I was ordered again the wings of his choice,
Asked to settle it, then I made no noise.

Hundreds of these wings lie here,
And mine's right there.

The next moment, I remember
My nightingale sang.

I was caged again, but this time with no wings in hand.
Next morning the king's curse did the trick,
His daughter was dead!
