It’s spring time
The sky is playfully blue like it came out of a coloring book
Accented with cookie cutter clouds, in animal cracker shapes
Birds chirping, honey suckles in bloom, sun stretching its rays, and the grass is crisp and green

Dedicated to the Family of Ryan Moats (Google Him)

Is it just me?
Or can racism be affiliated with a global game of Where’s Waldo?

For My Mother

The doctors told you I had a hole in my heart
Your little boy was getting off to a rough start

The way Jesus’ birth was synonymous with a manger
My birth was synonymous with a blanket
Oh yeah, it was that serious
After I was released from the cold grasp of the doctors hands that pulled me into this world

Ask, Believe, Receive
That’s been my mantra since the secret was exposed to my psyche
The three step process Oprah assures will bless me with whatever I want or need
Let’s see…

I woke up this morning with a pix axe and a few sticks of dynamite in my hands
Today is the day I break down the pedestal I’ve crafted so carefully for you all of these years
Similar to a modern day Taj Mahal, this marvel I erected in my mind was seemingly indestructible

Every poet remembers their first time
That “Cherry Popper”
Be it good or bad, long or short
Deep or barely scratching the surface

“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas. Just like the ones I used to know”
Funny how quickly dreams can turn into reality
It was hard for me to fathom a Christmas away from home but, that time had come

Ladies and Gentlemen, before we begin this press conference,
I'd like to get a few things off of my conscience.

The next gift you receive after the first breath of life that expands your lungs…is your name
Unless you change it via the legal system or adopt a symbol to capitalize on your fame… it remains

I’m not the type of guy who likes to cheat
But let me tell you about the time I decided to creep
It’s my junior year in college and I’m lying in bed wide awake
4am and my ears have had just about as much as I can take

We had an agreement…

Our warriors would engage in combat with neighboring tribes to capture slaves for this new popular trade
We’ve been at odds for ages, so it was nothing to complete this task

There’s a lot of debate over the content of popular music these days
How the radio waves are polluted and similar products are distributed
Without thought or effort, the idiot box is fed with images of false lives to be beamed inside our heads
I’m not here to disagree with all of that

The Golden Rule

Inspired by Shel Silverstein

The golden rule says
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
But Lee was a scientist and set out to test this rule

He tripped an old man on the side walk
Stole candy from a baby
Sang off key in choir rehersal, driving his director crazy
Ranout on his lunch tab
Pulled the tail on a pupy
Even gave a homeless man a check
Signed, but for no money

Lee came back home ready to be punished for his sins
But nothing happened.
Lee had been forgiven

The whole time Lee was acting like a fool
Everyone he’d wronged was living by this rule
They forgave him and sought no retribution
That day the scientist found his problem had a solution
Forgiveness
