Edward Schriner Poems

I met God today on the street
Sitting on a park bench in the city
I asked him, 'How do you do, Lord? '
And He replied, 'As fine as could be, my son.'
...

A lone tree stands in a field, broken and bruised
Recalling the many times in its life that it's been used
A fractured limb revealing the marks of a child's rope swing
Its roots recalling the soothing moisture of a babbling spring
...

Countless thousands forced from their beloved homeland in the East

Heavy hearted were they as they faced a journey into the great unknown
...

Can anyone else make such a sight
Really as beautiful as God's own hands
Even as pretty as a sunset in late afternoon
Art is the best way to describe such works
...

She wakes up to find her father over her
Hovering above, dressed in only his robe.
A look in his eyes that spells instant trouble
Her heart hardens feeling that she has no hope.
...

Think of me
As you look upon a grassy knoll
And you will see me rolling in the clover
...

Through the times I've gotten to know you
I have held you always in great esteem
You have always been there for others in need
I feel privileged to have called you my friend
...

Part I
1999
Thunder rolls across the lone prairie
...

He was born in a manger
A simple bed filled with hay
A special child likes nobody else
Destined to give his life away.
...

She stands on the corner of the block
Nobody taking heed to her pleading cries
'Won't somebody please feed my baby? ' she laments
As she chases off the bloodthirsty, swarming flies.
...

I saw into the eyes of a child today
And I saw hope staring back at me
The windows of a young soul
So clear for everyone to see.
...

Flowers in the nighttime sky
Blooming purple and red and green
Possibly the most beautiful sight
My blessed eyes have ever seen

I Met God Today

I met God today on the street
Sitting on a park bench in the city
I asked him, 'How do you do, Lord? '
And He replied, 'As fine as could be, my son.'
He was wearing a ragged, old coat
Shoes full of holes and no socks to speak of
He was drinking from a paper sack
What it contained, I did not inquire of it.
Mumbling to himself as he took a sip
From the bottle within the bag
He lay back down upon the bench
And went to sleep disregarding the cold.

I met God today at my school
Playing on the jungle gym during recess
I asked Him, 'How are you doing, my Lord? '
As He replied, 'As wonderful as ever, my son.'
He frolicked amongst the other children
On the playground as spry as a colt
Always being respectful of the others
Taking his turns as polite as can be.
Laughing with the others as He played
Tag and other simple forms of kids' games
Observing the unconditional love
As I looked into my Lord's eyes.

I met God reading my Bible
As I thumbed through the four Gospels
I asked Him, 'How am I doing, Lord? '
And He replied, 'I am proud of you, my son.'
And as I read on within the Gospels
It spoke of His love for me
And how He gave his Son as a sacrifice
To die on the cross for all of us.
And then I went on past into the Epistles
Letters that a man named Paul had written
Telling all of his wonderful conversion
And how the Lord gives us absolute grace.

I met God during my quiet time
As I prayed to Him with requests and praises
I asked Him, 'What are you doing, Lord? '
As He replied, 'I am watching over you, my son.'
'For you sat by me and kept me company,
Providing me the love I give to you
You played with me among my children,
And loved them as much as I do.
You spend time with me in My Word,
As you thirst for knowledge regarding my love.'
I met God today while I wrote this poem
And I know that He is proud of me.
