Rap as poetry or poetry rap?

From Langston Hughes, via Amira Baraka, to NWA

Langston Hughes (Who but the lord?) - Amira Baraka - (assassin poems) - NWA - F**** tha Police

Rap on the page = poor poetry, mundane ideas and obvious rhythms....

In some cases yes but not all, have you read Saul Williams 'The Lost Emcee Scrolls'. admit NWA not the best example but it is more the subject/sentiment of police brutality.
