Hartman says, the opposite of prose is not poetry, but verse, a formal difference. The word " poetry" is much too loaded with positive and mystical connotations for it to be useful in a literary discussion.

Is there such a thing as prose poems? I suppose, but the real question is, is there such a thing as prose verse? No. I prefer the term poetic prose paragraphs for the ultimately confused and confusing term, prose poem.
