    The 2014 Joseph Brodsky/Stephen Spender Prize for the translation of Russian poetry into English is now open for entries. Please spread the word!

    Judged by Sasha Dugdale, Catriona Kelly and Glyn Maxwell, and now in association with The London Magazine, this biennial worldwide prize celebrates the long friendship between Joseph Brodsky and Stephen Spender as well as the rich tradition of Russian poetry. The prizes are: £1,500 (first) , £1,000 (second) and £500 (third) .

    The Book of Plans Hopes And Dreams

    An Anglo-German writing competition to link 1914 to 2114 and beyond by writing a poem or short story to each era. The competition judge: Panel led by Rebecca Bilkau and Prof Mike Abramson CBE.     The Tenth Annual Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize 2014

    A prize of £1,750 and publication by The Waywiser Press in the UK and the USA is given annually for a poetry collection by an author who has published no more than one previous poetry collection. The winner will give a reading at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. in the autumn of 2015, where he or she will appear with the tenth contest's judge. Submit a manuscript of between 48 and 88 pages.

    Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets Open

    The African Poetry Book Series is now open for submissions to the Sillerman First Book Prize. The winner receives USD $1000 and publication through the University of Nebraska Press and Amalion Press in Senegal. An " African writer" is taken to mean someone who was born in Africa, who is a national or resident of an African country, or whose parents are African. Poetry manuscripts should be at least 50 pages long. All entries will be read anonymously, and there is no fee to submit. We accept electronic submissions through Submittable only.

    Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Competition

    This prize for a poem under 40 lines, welcomes international submissions.
    Deadline: November 30,2014
    Prizes: First prize is 1,000 Euro (on 7 October 2014 approx. USD 1263 or GBP 784) , a week-long writer’s retreat at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and publication in Southword Literary Journal. The MLC will subvent travel costs for the winner up to 600 Euro and provide hotel accommodation and meals for three days during the Cork Spring Poetry Festival. The author who takes first prize will have the chance to read the winning poem at the Cork Spring Poetry Festival in February 2014. There will be a second prize of E500, third prize of E250, and ten runners-up will each have their poems published and receive Southword’?s standard fee of E30.
    Entry Fee: €5 per poem, or 5 poems for €20.

    The Baltimore Review’s winter contest is “Work.”

    Why?Whether you live to work or work to live, work consumes much of our lives. And it’s a great excuse to do some research about how others live.
