The Gambler's Game

They trade time for a few dimes
And their hearts for multiple clubs
Waste all of their money in pubs
Why commit all these hopeless crimes?

They sold everything for dice
Their money chewed up and spit out
Now all they do is mope and pout
They lost to this fool's paradise

But still the machine turns and churns
Gobbling the money that they brought
Until it takes more than they thought
And they realize that they've burned

Beaten at this game that was theirs
They have gotten caught in the war
Now step back and see all the scores…
All they need are those prickly pairs

They knew that it was a gamble
Does the game of chance hold its sway
Or do you, perhaps, get a say?
Now gone, they find life a scramble
