You read and read and read some more,
The reading never ends.
My Lord—oh heaven help me! —God
Your surest help please send!
An angel on my right, oh Lord,
An angel on my left.
An angel up above me, God,
To guard my every breath.
My feet, stricken, waver and slip
(The road's so very long)
Though others, before me, have strode
My knees are not that strong.
So here I sit, procrastinate,
And weep for all my woes.
As—all around me—others crawl,
I take The Thinker's pose.
But fashion me a lawyer's heart
And birth a lawyer's mind.
Give me a passion for the truth,
And judgment prudent: kind.
Then I will go in peace my Lord,
So set your servant free.
Yet cracking the whips about my head:
It must be only me.
