A Man's Drawers

I was cleaning out a drawer
Of photos and knick-knacks
Keys to locks, long lost
Clips, clasps, caps to pens
Long drained of ink
Scraps of life past
Drawn to this menagerie
Of waste remembered
On I delve for fresh space
To fill with new displaced treasure
Screws, nuts and washers
Left over from erecting construction necessities
Rubber bands and ties
That held papers and bread of life
Colored pills and vials
Of ailments best forgotten
A green bowtie
That a Leprechaun left in haste
A clipping of news
Announcing our severance
That tape could not mend
The bottom found, almost through
There, pressed against the side
A firework stick
That comes without a clue
I fetch it up, a matchbook, too
Put flame to tip
As I gaze out the window
The stars the stick reflecks
Cast light on an old polaroid
I reach for and bring to view
You're still a sparkler
On a dark and dreary fall night
