Define You

In life we all make mistakes but those mistakes don't have to define you. You could have once been a crack-head mama but that doesn't mean that's who you always going to be because being a crack-head mama do not have to define you. Hey, you could have been a hustler on the street but that lifestyle does not have to define you. For today that crack-head mother could now be a nurse nurturing and caring for others because she did not let that mistake define her. That Hustler is now a single father raising two little girls teaching them what it means to be a woman. He did not let the street define him. We are all born flawed so we will make mistakes but those mistakes do not have to define you.

If I

If I can put into words my feelings for you it would be an endless novel. If I could paint a masterpiece of your beauty all other masterpieces would look like a cartoon next to yours.
If I knew a way to bottle your love I would sell it and the whole world would finally be able to know what real love is. If I can love you forever I will.
If I...

Because Of My Skin

I get judge because of my skin.
Because of my skin, I'm looked at as guilty and never innocent. Because of my skin, there are those who believe I'm stupid no matter how intelligent I am. Because of my skin, People think I am more likely to be a rapper instead of an opera singer. I live in a country where even though I was born free I'll always be seen as a slave all because of my skin.

Love Me, Less

You say you love me more than life itself, but would you love me less if I was gay? Would you love me less if I told you I don't believe in God? Would you love me less if I had an abortion instead of having a child? Would love me less if I was born with a disability and look different from the norm? Would love me less if I married outside my race. You say you love more than life itself but what if my life was different than what you expected, would you love just as much, or would you love me less?

Mask-Free

Today I woke up and decided to go mask-free. No longer will hide the real me for today I'm going mask-free. I am done trying to conform to what others want me to be for I am now mask-free. Now, when I look in the mirror I'm going to be proud of the reflection that I see. Because it will be me mask-free.

Ain't No Crystal Stairway

Langston Hughes once wrote 'life ain't no crystal stairway' and lately I've been finding that to be true. Earlier this year I had to have two of my toes amputated and every day I'm reminded of it with little twinges pain. But I'm learning not to let that pain slow me down because life ain't no crystal stairway but that doesn't mean just because obstacles get in my way I will stop my life climb. Yeah, I might have to put my socks on a little different now and take Tylenol for pain but I'm still climbing because I'm going to make it to the top even if life ain't no crystal stairway.

In The Footsteps

n the footsteps, we walk. We walk in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all the people who died and marched beside him. We march in the footsteps of Harriett Tubman and all the obstacles she went through as she constantly risked being recaptured as she helped free others who were enslaved. We walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X and all he fought for us to have a voice and independence from our oppressors. We walk in the footsteps of black entrepreneurs like CJ Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Jay-Z, and many others for through their hard work and determination they achieved the American dream. So as we continue to protest and strive for greater heights let's remember those before us as we walk in their footsteps.

A Covid Poem

First, there was Novel, next there was Delta, Now, there is Omicron. Covid keeps mutating with no end in sight this is some virus with the ending of the world might. The funny thing is the real virus is not covid but it is us. We, who chose to politize the virus and chose our politics over human life. We are the reason the world is still suffering through this strife. We who chose to not get a shot because we scream it is our human right not. As we scream about this right we better also realize we are mass murders of human lives. If we want to show real humanity let's all get Vac so we can live.

The Voice Behind The Pen

I write poetry because in the real world my voice feels like it is unheard. Only when I write my poetry do people seem to hear my words. Many people after reading my works probably wonder who is this man? Who is the voice behind the pen? Well, I am that man in the wheelchair you ignore as I try to cross the street. I am that man you reach over in the checkout line when I too am there to get something to eat. I am that man in the wheelchair who has to ask you to please move on the bus because you're sitting in my seat. I am the one people laugh at and make jokes about just because I have CP. Yes, that is who I am. My Name is Ronald Smith and I have Cerebral Palsy I am the voice behind the pen.

Right

Today when you walked in the house I said hello and for that I got a right. When I ask why you gave me another right. You sat you love me with all your heart but you the only love you have ever shown me comes with a right. I once ask you to give me a ring and you did but the ring was on you're right hand as you jabbed me with it.Well as I sit here icing my bruise I begin to look back at all the years we've been together and you know what me letting you abuse me is wrong so I'm going to walk away and leave you because that's right.
