Mirror

There stands a lonely mirror
With glass of human size,
An ornate frame supports the claim
Of a picture made of lies.

I stand before this mirror
Gazing and enthralled,
For the girl I see before me
Can’t be me at all.

“Mirror you deceive me, ”
I tell it with a laugh,
“That girl was me ten years ago
Her looks have come and passed.”

Alas the picture didn’t change,
The girl stood fair and tall,
'Surely there are tricks at play
On this mirror on the wall.'

'That can't be me now can't you see,
I'm not so thin and tall,
Her face is free of aging,
that can't be me at all.'

'Mirror stop this game you play,
show now only truth.
I wish to see my haggard face,
don't taunt me with my youth! '

Then the mirror spoke to me
which gave me such a fright,
For the voice she used was mine, no doubt,
but soft and fair and light.

'My dear of course this is you,
but not just as you see,
She is the beauty in you,
reflected out in me.'

'A woman strong and brave,
with heart as pure as gold.
There's a beauty deep within you,
forget now what you're told.'

I sat and stared in wonder,
and thought, 'this can't be true...'
But now I see, it's true for me,
and also true for you.
