Maria Schmitt Poems

1.

What would result
if your name meant nothing
some letters
some accented syllables
...

Is it bad that I wanted
to say yes
to your indecent proposal
there in the classroom in front of your friend?
...

Friends scattered across the courtyard
like transitory shadows
now here
now there
...

The light from the streelamps
was golden and dripping
running down and bleeding into the rain
on the streets.
...

I stepped outside of myself last night
when our goodbye went from normal to romantic and ridiculous.
I asked myself what I was doing but somehow it didn’t matter –
your lips, your hands, your back were all mine and I wanted them.
...

I am suddenly overwhelmed with a
feeling – I should be somewhere else
entirely – this is not me, one is lost
in the waves, each bubble, each
...

Let me sleep through the static and then carry me home -
away, quietly,
take me and wrap me up in silence and your arms,
blanket me.
...

Breeze across the summer grass
Morning dew drips down glass

Sorrow passes from one to the next
...

I am frustrated with myself
and my self-afflicted situation
my confusion
my revulsion
...

I almost wish I had kissed you back,
I could feel it in my gut – the need.
Your fingers curled around mine, tips to
knuckles to palms, all mine.

Name

What would result
if your name meant nothing
some letters
some accented syllables
a blurb
is all that it is.
An identity? I think not.
So many share it with you
that originality,
personality,
are lost in the lines and curves.
An “m” here, an “e” there,
mix it up and you’re no longer
you.
You’re him
or him
or that other one.
Rip it off your chest,
“Hello, my name is ____.”
It’s the blank that concerns me.
You are more than a self-adhesive advertisement.
You’re goofy
and brilliant
and a mystery to be discovered.
The letters taint you,
can’t contain you.
You burst beyond their form,
I can’t stop you.
You’re a strut
and a smile
and your name means nothing.
Escape it.
