Two Kid Knees And A Stone By Aneesh Jain And Meghna

I love kidney beans on toast
And sometimes without it too
Because I donated one to my dying father
And the other helps me in the loo

Sometimes kidney donations make for great excuses
And sometimes they’re so much more than what they seem
-little round brown ball-like structures
Hanging out with their buddies the liver and the spleen
desperate to expel fluids, failing only in the case of ruptures

But sometimes there’s trouble - they’re called kidney stones
And the beans are no longer good for rajma chawal*
They’ll break your teeth, your spirit, your bones
So take care of your kidneys and have a good bowel

*Rajma Chawal is an Indian delicacy. Rajma are kidney beans. Chawal is rice.
