Olivia Slemmermann Poems

Its origins are uncertain
A celebration most certain.
At the turn of the seasons
The vernal equinox the reason
...

My tears
Soaked my pillow last night
...

stealthily moving in the marsh, crocodile!
herds of animals thirstily they drink.
...

Fragrant nutmeg and acorns
Gold dust and sweet corn
Emerald and sapphire blooms
Where have they all gone
...

Evening shadows brings 'em out to feed
Verily, in herds mighty raised
Elephants aplenty amongst the reeds!
Nightly yonder they traverse crazed,
...

child learns to condemn
growing with criticism
will learn how to fight
when hostility surrounds
...

It’s a time for celebration
A time for joy and goodwill
For young ones and the old
So this is Christmas I am told
...

Oh my heart whatever be
You have wooed and selected only me
Thy rhyme and song so tender be
Yet how can I accept thee
...

Fantasizing or dreaming what have I been
Whatever… are you really, really real?
Or just a hallucination my mind conjured
‘Cause I know how ill I’ve been
...

Living a life on watery adventure
The pirate revels upon the roughest sea
Playground and battling ground for treasure
The loot divided of battles bloodily fought free
...

What would I have done without eyes
No way to gaze at, or scrutinize
...

All I want is your close embrace
Feel of your fingers through my hair
It feels so good, my heart will race;
...

My love has gone I know not where
When I call his phone I know he’s there
Why won’t he answer might I ask
Just cuts me off without a word
...

Hide, my angel, run!

Your smile is wasted -
...

Silken robes and fancy gowns,
Bright rubies and gold have I none
Fame or great name I do not have
All I bring is my guileless reliance
...

Aha! I know your face is black, not white
Even though you pretend to be so uptight
No camera you said to show your face
Let alone to view your living space
...

On a bright sunny morn,
She climbed up on high,
Sat on a rainbow
to watch the world go by.
...

Spring is in the air
Birds chirping everywhere
But, where are the bees
Are they all frozen in their hives?
...

The wind blew chanting long
Heralding a change in the weather
While kneading the grasses tall
As though it was the baker's dough

April Fools' Day It Is!

Its origins are uncertain
A celebration most certain.
At the turn of the seasons
The vernal equinox the reason
In medieval European regions
The Feast of Annunciation,
The Romans and Hindus,
Were free to choose
The first day of April a cultural celebration
Dawn the New Year by ancient tradition.

Fixed now by popular demand
New calendar the reason command
Thus belief it stems the creation
Of the Gregorian Calendar, meant organization
New Year, at the beginning of April was gone
In its place a new date was set upon
By Pope Gregory XIII in 1582
Be celebrated January first, 'twas decreed to.

France that year, adopted the reform
'Twas hard to make the population perform
According to a popular explanation,
Many had nay heard about its creation,
Many others refused to accept
Continuing the celebration they kept
To the first of April they did.
Thus on 'fool's errands' they were bid
By and by the traditionalists were sent
By the reformists' trick they went
Chasing something false to believe
Oh, what tangled webs were spun to deceive!

Till eventually, the practice
Did spread in Europe gratis
The New Year, the beginning of April was gone
The practice of hoax on that day born
The most light hearted of days
Caught on and known for hoax plays
All Fools' Day as it's sometimes be known
Throughout the world for practical jokes alone
Popular practices in hilarious mood
Sending someone on a 'fool's errand, ' include
Looking for things that don't exist;
Playing pranks, and getting people with tricks
Believe ridiculous things and false myths.
Famed today as April Fools Day, it is.
