Look Into My Eyes

Look into my eyes
Tell me what you see
I'm not asking much
Just take a look at me

When you ask I say I'm fine
But this is rarely true
Today I want to show you
A little of my view

I know you think that I'm no good
That I'm lazy and weak
But wait one second before you go
Just take a look at me

I am sure my eyes will tell you
More than words can say
They'll tell you I've grown tired
Of fighting everyday

I have fought a thousand times
Living is the prize
I am wounded from these battles
Just look into my eyes

The enemy is strong and tough
I've never known it quit
But I am strong as well you know
I will not submit

You may think I'm lazy
And I'm tired it is true
But if you had to fight today
You'd be tired too

I'm trying always to break free
To make the enemy repent
But it shows no sign of letting up
And I am almost spent

The pain is deep and constant
It never leaves my side
It's cold and sharp and heartless
And it knows where I hide

But that's not all it gets worse still
It likes to test my shield
It finds me on my own each day
It tries to make me yield

We struggle with each other
Its intention dark as sin
We clash and I fight long and hard
I will not let it in

Its tactics are vindictive
Its boundaries are unknown
It barks and roars and snarls at me
My heart's become like stone


So the next time you disregard me
Don't be so quick to shun
Just be thankful I am here today
Because it means I won

I tell myself this is not the end
Of this burden I'll be free
The battles will stop, the wounds will heal
The pain will be eased

It's hard to keep on thinking straight
To know what must be done
It feels like when I win I lose
So to lose must mean I've won

I'm sad to say I'm going now
I can't afford to wait
It has come again to test me still
There's an enemy at the gate

I hope your view has changed a little
And your judgment is revised
If you find yourself forgetting
Just look into my eyes
