He said it was the touch of love
But it hurt
Didn’t he love me?
I wanted so much for him to love me
...

There she sat by the side of the waters
Her beautiful braids undone, her proud look gone
Her beautiful garments replaced by sackcloth in tatters
Ashes and dirt strewn in her kinky hair

True Love Hurts

He said it was the touch of love
But it hurt
Didn’t he love me?
I wanted so much for him to love me
So I accepted the touch of love
It only hurt more

One day, he did not only touch
He lay over me and covered me with his love
It hurt me but I figured
Maybe true love hurts
Red, trickling down from me;
The colour of love?
Maybe this was how love felt

I wanted him to love me
I let him touch me and cover me with his love
Sometimes, it hurt and other times, I was numb
If true love hurt, I could be loved no better than this
I wanted to hear him say it,
So I asked;
“Daddy, do you love me? ”
