A 21 Pegasus Wings (Boys Who Die As Men) Poem by Bill Smith

A 21 Pegasus Wings (Boys Who Die As Men)

Fighting a war against the visibly invisible
In a land far from home
Boys bearing Pegasus wings
In fear die as men

Whilst safe at home
Fake heroes walk surburban streets
Teetering on stilts of steel they take a life
For a word, a look out of place
Little men with big ideas
Bereft of imagination, of original thought
Not fit to lick the bloodied boots
Left by the empty hospital bed
Of true heroes, boys who died like men
Bearing Pegasus wings

Mothers cry, fathers sigh, politicians pacify
More on more the young boys die but not for Queen nor’ country
Robbed of three score years and ten these boys who died as men
Fly high, fly free, forever young, bearing Angel’s wings
