A Beaver's Bank Poem by Stephen Katona

A Beaver's Bank

Please believe this story is true,
Of a beaver that used money as glue.
It happened in 2004,
When two robbers broke the law,
Stealing lots of dough,
From their local casino.
They hid the loot in the nearest bank,
The kind that a river has on each flank,
Saying, 'No-one will find it in this creek,
I hope these bags do not leak.'

Now Bernie the beaver was out one night,
These peculiar packages gave him quite a fright.
He tore the material with chisel like teeth,
And saw thousands of dollars lying beneath,
So thanks to two thieves,
Bernie found the perfect leaves,
To finish his dam,
And off he swam,
To fill all the spaces,
With funny green faces,
An expensive cement,
For a hard working rodent.
Weaving countless bills,
With amazing skills,
He made a place to lie,
To keep his fur dry.
The pictures scared wolves from attack,
And tasted great as a winter snack.

One day the Louisiana police,
Came across an expensive masterpiece.
It looked the work of a practical joker,
A dam of money from the game of poker.

this 'nature' poem will be included in my upcoming March 2019 showcase. but, it sounds as though you may have confused 'dam' with 'hut'. i think the beaver would be lying/living in a hut (OR a cavity in a bank; not financial bank) , not lying on a dam, except during its nighttime work. i'm living temporarily where there is at least one beaver trying to clear an area of trees by a stream! there is a dam. bri (: thanks.

OOPS! my mistake. about beavers not being rodents. they are rodents (but rabbits aren't; rabbits used to be, apparently; has anyone told them?) according to Wikipedia, as Steve has so kindly pointed out to me (and i verified for myself online....if one can believe what one reads online) . i wonder if beavers realize that they are rodents. hmmm? good thing house mice are smaller. otherwise i would have to move to a larger house to accommodate them. bri :)

i see one of my best PH friends beat me to the punch with a comment. i believe it. where did you say the dam is located? ? i could be there in a couple of days i think. i think you reached a bit for lie/dry, but all's fair in love, war, and poetry. and i believe you will find that beavers are not rodents. a common mistake i bet. nice rhyming and well-told, enjoyable story. but did the beaver tell the cops the whole truth and nothing but the truth? ? i think there might have been a little speculation going on here. thanks for sharing. to MyPoemList for your nice poem and because i like beavers and their creations. i wish i could cut down trees and make pond homes like they do. bri :) i'm having trouble sending this to you, but it gave me extra time, and in that time i thought of more to say. if the beaver had left the cash in it's bank, it could have been earning interest. dam it!

So very interesting, but quite unbelievable! Yes, the thieves well deserved this! Kudos to Bernie! He must have taught those greedy men not to keep unlawful money! Beavers are such interesting creatures! Stephen, you seem to be a close observer of the animal world! How your characters live through your poems! Enjoyed!
