A Candle Poem by David Orioli

A Candle

Our love was like a candle bright
The closer I got the more it burned
Like a moth I was tricked by your light
The more it hurt evermore I yearned

Extinguished is the fire we had
Our love now hardened and turned to wax
The memories we shared, good and bad
And the flickering light our only tax

In haste you wish for a brighter light
But you're still a tiny wick
And I now having more insight
Can see this little trick

So let the scented memories of the past
Teach you that only true love is right
With this knowledge the flame will last
And your next ember kindled will burn forever bright
