A Child Whispers Poem by Mark Scotting

A Child Whispers

With eyes wired shut
Immersed in the tenebrous
The white noise of night, seduces me
Decomposing, I melt into unconsciousness

And in the darkness,
With nowhere to hide
Listen, can you hear it?
The whispers of a child

Unspoken commentaries
And unpretentious words
Echo through the silence
Only a quiet whisper heard

Conjuring up thoughts
Memories of the past
Flashes of Pohutukawa blossoms
Summers that didn’t last

Recollections,
Misplaced youth and aspirations lost
The years have advanced
And growing up, what’s the cost?

In the darkness,
Nowhere to hide
Can you hear it?
Whispers of the child
