A Family Of Friends Poem by Margaret Shaw

A Family Of Friends

I look around me,
And what do I see?
A group of friends,
Who have inspired me,
We're there for each other,
We're there any time,
And I can say...

We're a legacy,
A legacy of friends,
We've come together in unity,
Let's join our hands,
And praise our God,
For we are a family of friends.

We've looked around us,
And found our strength,
He is around us,
O praise his name,
He brought us together,
In this place,
So I say again..

We're a legacy,
A legacy of friends,
We've come together in unity,
Let's join our hands,
And praise our God,
For we are a family of friends.

We thought we knew,
Who we were,
But as the days when it by,
It was unclear,
But we came together,
To talk it out,
And we soon found out...

We're a legacy,
A legacy of friends,
We've come together in unity,
Let's join our hands,
And praise our God,
For we are a family of friends.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this while in my first year of college. I went to a Baptist College in Jacksonville, Texas and sung in the choir. We were traveling back from a BMA National Convention in Arkansas when I came up with these words. We were a pretty close nit group but that didn't come about until after the convention. The last night we were in Arkansas we decided to have a bible study before bed. When we did we spilled our hearts out to each other for the first time that entire year. What should have lasted only 1 hour lasted from 10pm to 3am. We became more of the family we were to be that entire year. We realized that being a family of friends was the legacy we wanted to leave behind for the next year of students.
