A Farewell To Love Poem by Robert Edmondson

A Farewell To Love

I opened the letter today
As the words were read
The doors of my heart
Closed……

The page fades and falls away
As I drift back
Into my memory
The recollection of you.

Sweet bittersweet images
Flood my mind
Watching you sleep next to me
And the feeling of contentment.

That night I pledged my soul to you
All the love that one person can give
Gently brushing you hair aside
As the storm passed overhead.

As all things in nature
The storms pass
The wind calms
But my love never wavered.

Even when you went away
To seek your fortune
My soul went with you
And I have never been whole since

But today I received the message
That you are to wed
Custom states that I should smile
But sadness overtakes me.

My mind is happy for you
My soul is destroyed
How can I reclaim what I gave you?
How can I be whole again?

As all things in nature
The storms pass
The wind calms
And so must I.

I opened the letter today
As the words were read
The doors of my heart

Closed……
