A Highway Ride Poem by Brandon Park

A Highway Ride

I feel for the keys in my pocket
Click the unlock button
And open the door

I slip in the driver's seat
Click on the seat belt
Fits like a glove

I grip the wheel
And shake the shifter
Gotta make sure

I turn the key
And crank her up
Boy, she really purrs

I press the clutch
And throw her in first
Now it's on

I make my way to the highway
Fly up the entrance ramp
And now it's on

I'm flying through the gears
Weaving in and out
Watching the mirrors for the red and blue

I keep going and going
Watching the RPMs climb
Watching the boost gauge fluctuate as I get on the throttle

The car just loves it
I bang through the gears
And she just responds; no questions

I fly past all the traffic
There's my exit
I make my way to it and off the highway

I cruise on back to where this girl belongs
Pull 'round back
And park her up

I shut her off
Close the door
And lock her up

I look over and see her older sister
Waiting for me
Waiting for me to take her out for a drive

One day, honey
One day your keys will be mine
One day
