A Knock Upon My Door Poem by Richard Netherland Cook

A Knock Upon My Door

A knock upon my door

There came a knock upon my door,
Through the still and late of night,
The sound awakes me from my sleep,
And fills my heart with fright.

It is not wind and not a dream,
For many times before,
Always in the dark of night,
Comes a knock upon my door.

Is it you Lord that knocks upon,
My door and quietly stands?
Or some poor soul, out in the cold,
Who needs a helping hand.

I stand before the door now,
My heart still full of fright,
Who is it at my door,
Who comes this time of night?

I hesitate to answer, yet,
For fear what evil I may see,
But fear I must surpress this night,
For Lord it may be thee.
