A Love Found Poem by Luke Bushen

A Love Found

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess
She lived inside the splendid walls of her Father’s grand fortress
Tall and slender, graceful and charming, all looked up to her
Even the strongest of hearts her gentle spirit could conquer
Alas, I could go on and on about her beauty so swell
But, there is a tale that I now write this poem to tell

As our princess went strolling through the gardens on day
A handsome young sorter, he chanced to pass that way
He stopped upon seeing the princess’ serene face
“Good heavens! ” he declared, “never before have I seen such grace.
I have an idea… I will write a dandy song or two
I’ll win her heart and make her my own. Yes, that’s what I’ll do! ”
And so he called to the princess and broke out in melody
He threw his head back and sang out in a voice strong and deep
Emotion flowed from the words as he sang of ancient stories
He sang of love and beauty, he sang songs of sacred glories
His voice climbed high and then swooped low as if to touch the ground
He filled the air with grand chorus and captivating sound
But when he finished she simply smiled and turned to depart
For through the ears was not the way into her precious heart

Next came passing by a man of great outer appearance
He caught his breath upon seeing the princess’ excellence
“Truly” he thought, “ this is the greatest beauty I’ve ever seen.
I shall win her heart and make her my own, this woman of my dreams.”
So he took her hand and bowed, and with a leap began to dance
With powerful splendor he moved, his eyes burned with romance
He turned and spun and jumped and flipped across the patio
Hoping her love would be won by his strength’s exquisite show
But when he reached out his hand she politely left his fantasy
For the way into her heart was not through that which she could see

Next came passing by a man bearing a large golden chest
She wondered what treasure would require such strength for him to invest
He looked not to the left or right, but gazed steadily forward
As if on a sacred mission, he uttered not a word
She followed him through the gate inside the castle’s walls
She followed him through dark chambers and long and winding halls
She followed him through the door of the great throne room
And down the royal carpet of silver and maroon
Which at the end, before the throne, he laid his heavy prize
And as he straightened she looked for the first time deep in his eyes
Though exhausted from the long carry through the castle’s maze
He stood tall, strong and handsome, and gently returned her gaze
“Dear sir” she asked, “if I may venture, what is this great thing
That to the deep of my father’s fortress to tirelessly bring? ”
“My lady, if only you knew the extent of my quest
From where it started and what it’s overcome you’d never guess.
Through obstacles and resistance, through ever mounting oppression
Through all that would come against me, I’ve brought you this possession.”
Wide eyed, she asked, “What is it that hides inside that chest? ”
“It’s yours” he said, “and yours alone. Do with it what you think best.”
Eagerly she reached out and threw back the golden lid
And gasped in awe upon seeing that which the cover hid
Gently she stooped down and lifted his heart from the ground
And that is how, through his heart, the princess’ love was found.
