A Mind Of Her Own Poem by PADMINI DUTTA SHARMA

A Mind Of Her Own

©A mind of her own

She again committed a fatal mistake
By giving in to her mother’s dictates
This has been going on for years
She was never allowed to have any peers.

Since she was a little child
She was controlled tough & mild
Her mother being a domineering soul
Dissuaded her from reaching her goal.

A pessimist and a sadist of sorts
That abhorred fun and was full of knots
She was always grumbling or complaining
Imagined the world was against her conniving.

Basically a dumb and a God forsaken creature
Not worthy of admiration for any of her features
Thriving on pretension
She thought she was God’s own extension.

Her little girl was growing big
Unawares she lost out like a pig
Suffocated and stressed to the core
She wanted to fly free off the shore.

Her mother wouldn’t let her decide on anything
Complacently thinking herself the most cunning
If her daughter wanted to wear blue
She would discard that for another hue.

Perversity, suspicion and dominance
Ruled her life in abundance
Extremely fond of that “control button”
She desisted everyone from eating mutton.

A proclivity for undermining all
That led to her untimely downfall
A natural inclination to rule the air
She never laughed and smiled rare.

She treated everyone like her subordinates
Loved lecturing and issuing mandates
Her first hit came
On a day with a heavy downpour
It was an untimely rain
Her timid daughter had lost control
She had conceived, oh how could she?

Her mother insisted on abortion
It was an out of wedlock conception
She had the final say
Her daughter’s pleadings were kept at bay.

Petrified and bewildered
The girl then deciphered
She must lay bare the fact
Without taking recourse to any tact.

Outrageously she blurted
That she loved a village lad
Knowing well that her mother wouldn’t be glad
They had to be married to her utter disgust
Her mother thought couples slept together
Out of sheer lust.

She tried her best to dissuade
Consistently tried to persuade
Utterly frustrated to find their love budding unabated
Within a short span her wrath she vented.

Always looking for pretexts
She mostly talked out of context
Meanwhile her girl gave birth this time
She pretended she had gone sublime
Her malicious intentions agile and active
She had been hatching plans like a paranoid.

She concocted stories against her husband
Proving that he was absolutely redundant
The day this poor soul was forced out
The girl looked bewildered by such a fall out
She dared not cry or protest
Lest it goes against her mother’s behest
Scared of her mother’s abominations
She had got used to her dominations

Today was a different day
It was all heat in the month of May
The girl ran down like an insane
Hugged and kissed him like a profane
They both returned to pack their stuff
Left with the children in a huff
Poor lady looked aghast, shocked and weak
Her era of domination had taken a back seat.

If we may take a lesson from this
We should never go beyond a basis
When children grow into adults
They should not be subjected to insults
Remember they have a right to live
The way they choose to believe
They have a mind of their own
That is deep seated in each bone.
