A Misunderstanding Poem by Francis Duggan

A Misunderstanding

I like his work he overheard her say
He felt quite pleased though he took it the wrong way
'He thought' if she likes my work she will like me
Perhaps I ought to ask her out for tea.

When he introduced himself she seemed surprised
So you are the artist I hadn't realized
I love your work your talent is so great
And with the very best there is you rate.

'He thought' I was right she likes me I can see
And he glanced at his watch as he said to her maybe
You'd like to join me in some cake and tea
And spend some of your precious time with me.

She blushed saying sorry that reminds me by the way
I cannot have tea with you for I can't delay
I have an appointment to keep today
And I'm pressed for time so sorry I can't stay.

She left the gallery left him standing there
With his slightly wounded ego to repair
And she thought to herself he must be mad
He looks at least as old as my Grand dad.

The way he spoke he had it in his head
That he would like to have me in his bed
But 'tis not my fault if I've been misunderstood
If he thought I fancied him when I said his art was good.

But at least he had not bowed to father time
He had made a pass at a young beauty in her prime
And though her polite knock back had caused him slight regret
There's lots of life in the old bugger yet.
