A Once-Blank Canvas

The once-blank canvas stares at me
Spattered with blood-stains red
From the days when I hated life
And wanted myself to be dead

The once-blank canvas stares at me
Spotted with smiley faces yellow
From the days when things weren't so bad
And life felt ripe and mellow

The once-blank canvas stares at me
Riddled with jagged smears green
From the days when I was jealous
Or just feeling sour and mean

The once-blank canvas stares at me
Dotted with a million teardrops blue
From the days when I couldn't be strong
And the days when I thought about you

Know'st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
