A Poem For Bill Poem by Merle Steinmann

A Poem For Bill

This is a poem for my friend Bill
'says 'Yer poems don't rhyme and never will

I gave it some thought and so will share
'bout a second grade trip that took to the air

I was an educator second to none
Decided to have some classroom fun

I contacted NASA and pretty soon
Had a spring time trip, up to the moon

I lined up a bus, some lunches to go
We had apples, bananas and fresh escargot

Sandwiches, chips and couple of carrots
A carton of milk and some crackers from Paris

The cook was upset ''cause we we didn't ask her! '
'was happy later, when it became a disaster

The launch was scheduled for the 15th of June
When we left the school we were singin' a tune

There was Susie and Johnnie and Patty and Chester
Jorge and Jesus, Mohammed and Lester

Bonita and Ralph, Serena and Morgan
Nicole and Stanley, Trent and Jorgan

We also had a parent or two
Mrs.' Johnson, Valdez and my sister Sue

I had learned from a previous excursion
You might need a hand with a bathroom diversion

We headed on down to the nearest motel
By the launch site where loading was scheduled for well?

Seems timing was finicky on these sort of things
We might leave at seven or maybe 'Next spring.'

They loaded us up in the Spaceship Endeavour
And started the countdown which went on forever

I know there is something you're wanting to know
Little Johnny hollered, 'Hey, I gotta' go! '

So I quickly undid him and he did his thing
Countdown continued right down to the ding

We blasted right off and things went real good
We were headed for orbit, just like we should

We waved to the folks who were manning the station
Then made a left turn and went on with vacation

We flew 'round just once to look the things over
Then landed the craft with the aid of the Rover

I tried to hold 'em but couldn't it seems
They were runnin' around gettin' dirt on their jeans

We looked around quickly, not a whole lot to see
Then loaded back up for some Tranquility

We got home at seven without much ado
The kids were all sleepin' and that was good too

I don't think I'll ever ask them again
But the kids sure remember their field trip of '10
