A Proud King Once I Met Poem by Bireswar Halder

A Proud King Once I Met

I came across a proud king sprawling on the ground helplessly
Once in crowning glory, he mocked all by flaunt and vaunt of his power and position
He gave himself to lustful and indulgent life
And a megalomania made him an overreacher

Dear King, power, position and wealth are transient
Similarly youth is also not permanent in human life
Wine and women can't give ever lasting peace
And with their influence, you lost most trusted friends.

Oh dear king, only a wise man can punish who loves simultaneously
Pride made you blind and discretion left you
You were guided by some unscrupulous stooges
Who flattered you to win favours

Sometimes you were allured by heady illusions
And failed to assay the genuine gems
You were lost only in sham glitters
Alas! What blunders you made throughout your life.

The rooks, bishops and knights are lost and lying scattered
All those you trusted most flew away one by one
The neglected and underestimated pawns surrounded you
Dear king, you failed to understand united strength of pawns.

Dear king, look at your decorated palace full with deep sighs
The lovely queen had to leave you being dominated and tortured
Neither you were happy nor you bestowed happiness to others
What a tragedy! You are alone in an open field today.
