A Self-Conscious Poem Poem by Nathan Strange

A Self-Conscious Poem

I am an insecure poem
so you don't have to read on...

Some people,
they don't like me
they say that
I am too short

I think that is ridiculous
How can you dislike someone for being too short?
Well, I am not someone I am a poem

And some people they say that I am too simple
and they don't like me because I read too openly and clearly.
They say that I don't compare with Shakespeare or Ginsberg.
Well I tell them I am not trying to be anyone I am not,
I am not that kind of poem!

But

Some people, they say that I am not even a poem!
? ? ? ?
Just because I am different
? ? ? ?
People are saying that they don't know what I am
? ? ? ?
This makes me sad
How can people not recognize what I am?

When ever I hear such criticisms I get upset
and I feel like crying...
I feel like I don't want to be here
and that this world is not for me.
However I shall not be moved
I will not cry
I will always stay the same
I believe in myself
I stand strong
I know that I am a poem
even if you think that I am not
I might not be Shakespear or Dylan Thomas
but
I guess it doesn't matter
Because
I am not part of the
flowery intelligentsia elite!

In the end, I am what I am
and that's all that matters.
