A Throwaway Society Poem by David Harris

A Throwaway Society

Rating: 5.0

We live in a throwaway society
and hardly anyone
appreciates anything they got.
Years ago, we looked after
everything we had;
if it got broken, we mended it.
Now if something gets broken,
most discard it in a bin,
then go to the local shops
and start all over again.
It seems to me
there is no appreciation anymore,
even when it comes to food.
They talk of the world’s starving,
yet everyday tons and tons of food
is just thrown away.
When will someone ever say stop,
don’t throw that away,
fix it for another generation
so they can learn and play.
As for the food
lets stop the wastage there.
If we did that,
there might well be enough to share
and no baby in the world
would go hungry anymore.

David, our political system is based on growth, which demands 'consumption'. without which our whole economy would disintegrate. I applaud your sentiments (and agree with them) but feel a tad cynical about things changing for ultruistic motives. Things will change, I've no doubt, but it will be as a result of global warming, not spiritual growth. You have certainly made a few people think with this provocative piece. love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Sadly it is true....my mother has been a dress maker for clothing for years...and has done more alterations now...then actually making new...by the time you by the material notions and pattern...you can get it cheaper at the store...the only benefit is it is a one of a kind...but I have to agree with the food part....such a waste of all the food thrown out....I worked for a resort in Florida and we got our lunch for free...well it was always leftovers from the menus...sometimes it would look like gruel...and the workers would complain....I never did...I was thankful I had a free meal for a year when money was very tight....I like your soap box David...lol
