A TIME FOR DANCING

A Time for Dancing

There was a time for dancing,
As we sashayed through that place,
And the mirrored ball was circling
Throwing beams across your face,
While your fingers sought out
Fabric trimmed with frilly bits of lace.

Oh, do you remember, darling
The heat of that first night,
The crowded floor, the busy bar,
The flashing, strobing light;
When you picked me out of all the girls
And we fell in love on sight?

I let you lead me through the door,
I trembled, but not with cold,
We danced to a tune we made our own,
A tune that is known of old,
And the lights in our eyes from the stars
And the street shone silver and gold.

Oh, do you remember, darling
That fumbled, fast, first kiss?
How your hands were inside my jumper
And I said, we can’t do this,
But we both knew that I’d let you,
You were impossible to resist.

And there in the bed where you’d been conceived
I discovered what men seek,
You kissed my hair, my eyes and my throat
As we lay there cheek to cheek
Not hearing the clock with its tick and its tock
And I thought that we were unique.

How young we were, how beautiful,
So strong, so fresh, so green,
With long hair parted like our lips
And our faith in the swinging scene,
With our protest songs and free love-ins;
Was it really all a dream?
Was it really just a dream?
