‘Che cosa ho ereditato'

Ho tolto l'ultimo
polveroso pezzo di porcellana
dalla cassa.
Era la tua salsiera,
con una goccia, marrone e
indurita, di sugo ancora
sul beccuccio.
Mi sono sentita afflitta per te,
al vederla, come mai prima.

' What Came To Me ' - Poem by Jane Kenyon

I took the last
dusty piece of china
out of the barrel.
It was your gravy boat,
with a hard, brown
drop of gravy still
on the porcelain lip.
I grieved for you then
as I never had before.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Fabrizio Frosini 16 January 2016

I've slightly changed the Italian title: 'Che cosa ho ereditato' [''what I inherited'']. I had translated, first, 'Venuto' (what came to me) but it is something she got from her mom's will, so I think that ''what I inherited'' is better.
