A Winter Night Poem by Richard Netherland Cook

A Winter Night

A winter night is creeping,
Up to my cottage door,
And I have calmly settled in,
Like many times before.

The howling winds of winter,
Whistle their ghostly sound,
And out in the surrounding forest,
Snow covers all the ground.

The old fireplace is glowing,
With a fire to keep me warm,
As I snuggle in my covers,
Away from the winter storm.

Birds are puffed and in a huddle,
Out on the window sill,
Trying to take some cover.
From the winter chill.

Out from the cottage window,
Where the garden path does go,
The moonlight dances with shadows,
On the newly fallen snow.

The lake is frozen over,
A reflection of bright light,
No nightly sounds from the animals,
Will be heard this winter night.

Cold winds blow about the cottage,
But my heart is warm within my chest,
While guarded by my sheltered walls,
I am safe from my unwanted guest.
