POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
'Afton Mountain Count' is from the forthcoming (e-?) book entitled ''Playzone Words''. It is an example of a 'sonnette, ' as in 'little sonnet'... still 14 lines, but instead of 10 syllables per line, there is only one. It has roots in the Dickensonesque 'fourteeners' and is related to the haiku and hokku... accenting 'brevity is the soul.'
Sonnettes, when printed, have all capital titles, and frequently, capitalized words in a subtitle, and no punctuation in the body. Poemhunter's rules do not allow this particular convention. Imagine a title, subtitle, and body centered down the page.
Afton Mountain in Virginia, overlooking a major migration route, is the cite of bird counts several times a year. The majesty, the magic, the music in their flight often interferes with the actual counting.
It was originally dedicated to Seth Williamson, naturalist, poetry citer, and voice of NPR's WVTF, from Va Tech.
