Alcohol Poem by Kenneth Maswabi

Alcohol

It's not known when and how it started to flow
It was not captured by historians or archaeologists
It does not care whether you are an intellectual or pauper
It will give you a shoulder to cry on
And give you hope (temporarily)
Freeing you from your self-imposed prison
It will take you anywhere
It's found in every culture and society
It has stood the test of time
Some say it's evil
Others swear by their mothers that it's good
It's humanity's second best liquid (after water and milk)
It has created homes and destroyed homes
It has extinguished conflicts and created more conflicts
It's the only medicine known to man that it is not a medicine (but it's a medicine)
It has started many great adventures and it has destroyed many lives
It's a bandage that is somewhat despised
It's the only drink that is able to create conversation
It's both a lubricant (conversation)and an inflammable chemical
It has the ability to bring calmness and the ability to wake up rage
During this COVID-19 outbreak it has been berated with ridicule
And seen as a source of concern
It was banned in some countries
The reason given is that it's poor at social distancing
It's a new kind of criticism
But it's used to all kinds of rebuke
It's one of the most abused liquid
And only God knows where it came from
