Alfred Housman Poem by Francis Duggan

Alfred Housman

His legacy to literature outlived the Shropshire Lad
And his verses known to the school boy were known to his grand dad
And the exquisite poems of Housman alive and read today
Suppose such things of beauty are not meant to decay.

What can one say of Housman's verse that's not been said before
His poems still read and recited far from his Homeland shore
His immortal book of verse the 'Shropshire Lad' survives the test of time
The genius of the fellow still living in his rhyme.

The snow has never melted on Housman's Cherry Tree
And the beauty in his verses is there for all to see
To the fields and woods he onced loved the Seasons come and go
But the legend of the great poet despite time's passage grow.

A renowned literary word smith great poems he did create
The standard set by Alfred Housman few can hope to emulate
One can truly say of him that he merited his fame
His legacy of beauty an honour to his name.

As long as there's a skylark for to pipe songs in the sky
The poems of Alfred Housman will never ever die
This gentle soul of genius as a major poet does rate
And he lives in his verses as a literary great.
