Asad Y.R.

Rookie (July 1991 / Afghanistan)

Alive

I read the words
and He re-breathed my spirit unto me
I feel the pain underneath me relieved
Simultaneously taking a beating and the stress was taken out of me

Cleaved away the doubt that held me back
and slowed me
down
by my feet

Freed myself from mental slavery
on this Godforsaken
modern-day
cotton-picking plantation
of a western civilization
only just by lowering my gaze

And getting lost in a maze
of the most amazing array
of words
ever put on display
