Almost Grown Poem by Nicholas Smith

Almost Grown

Almost grown about to leave the nest
Funny how you wanna grow up so fast

Looking back at the past like why didn't I just be patient? So much precious innocence, eager to be wasted
All just to say 'I'm a big boy now.' Not realizing what big boys do.
How they are.

No more wishing upon a star more like 'boy go get a job.'
No more 'ma I'm sick may I get some medicine? '

It's more like 'boy you better get some insurance.'
'Can't wait till I leave, she get on my nerves.' I say.

I can buy them new Js I heard,
Girls give it up easy showing their curves, and I
Can drink like a boss with no huss or
fuss from her.

But alas what would it all have gotten me?
Nothing but misery just a young man trying to hurry and see
The world but I have to open my mind before I climb that mountain

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Wrote this the day before my 18th birthday, thinking about how times flies; transfer from childhood to (almost) adulthood
